I’m working on Expand Vocabulary!
My strategy is Tune into Interesting Words
Secret to Success
When students read independently, they must read and practice this strategy with a “good-fit book.” Use a word collector to record and remember new and interesting words they find in their reading.
What you can say or model
We choose two or three words from our read-aloud that we think the children will encounter in their own reading or writing.

Secret to Success
When students read independently, they must read and practice this strategy with a “good-fit book.” Use a word collector to record and remember new and interesting words they find in their reading.
What you can say or model
We choose two or three words from our read-aloud that we think the children will encounter in their own reading or writing.
- While reading, stop and make a big deal over one of the words, saying how interesting the word sounds.
- Write the word on the word collector under the first letter of the word (e.g., deluge, d). A word collector is a simple grid with one letter of the alphabet per box.
- Continue reading until you come across two or three words each day.
- Review each of the words on the collector and discuss using it in conversations or writing.
- Repeated conversations about the words will help build their vocabulary and increase their understanding of the text.
