I’m working on fluency! My strategy is Read Good Fit Books
Secret to Success
Readers who want to improve their fluency need to spend a lot of time reading “good-fit books” at school and at home.
Children need time to find a good fit book and have someone supporting them and holding them accountable.
What you can say or model
Good fit books are ones that are interesting, readable, and understandable for the child. At school we teach the “I Pick” method.
I PICK reminders:
Language to use:
“Is that a good-fit book for you? Show me how you know that.”

- P-(Purpose) the book fits the purpose for reading
- I-(Interest) the book needs to be interesting for the child
- C -(Comprehend) the child needs to understand what he or she reads.
- K -(Know) the child needs to know most of the words in the book.
